For the Safe Use of Cutting Wheels

Important points for proper use of cutting wheel
  • It is a "safety guide" for customers who handle cutting wheels regardless of work or home.
  • Workers should read this "Safety Guide" before installing the grinding wheel on the machine.
A grinding wheel is a safe tool if you use it according to the basics.
However, improper use or careless handling of the machine will lead to the destruction of the grinding wheel.
Be sure to observe "what you should do" and "what you should not do" for safe work.
The following basic rules are based on occupational safety and health rules, grinding machines, and other structural standards.

Appropriate Use

  1. When handling the grinding wheel, follow the three principles of "Don't roll, don't drop, and don't hit." Store the grinding wheel flat on plywood in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
  2. Be sure to check the date of manufacture of the grinding wheel and use it on a first-in, first-out basis. (Reference. 3)
  3. Before attaching to the machine, inspect the appearance of cracks, cracks, chips, etc. on the grinding wheel.
  4. Make sure that the maximum peripheral speed and dimensions displayed on the grinding wheel are suitable for the machine. (Reference. 1)
  5. Use an appropriate flange with the same outer diameter and contact width on the left and right. (Reference.2)
  6. Be sure to check the direction of rotation before installing the grinding wheel.
  7. Always use a proper grinding wheel cover that covers at least 1/2 of the wheel.
  8. Perform a test run for at least 1 minute before the start of work on that day, and for at least 3 minutes when the grinding wheel is replaced.
  9. The work piece should be firmly fixed.
  10. Wear protective equipment such as protective goggles, dust masks, ear caps, and gloves while working.
  11. Prevent the scattering of sparks with a shield plate or the like.
  12. Prevent dust emission and adequate ventilation to prevent respiratory illness.

Something you can not do

  1. Do not use a grinding wheel that has been dropped or hit, or a grinding wheel that has an abnormality in the inspection.
  2. If the hole diameter of the grinding wheel does not fit the machine, do not force it in or repair the hole diameter.
  3. Do not use beyond the maximum operating peripheral speed indicated on the grinding wheel. (Reference.1)
  4. Do not use flanges with deformation, scratches, dirt, or rust on the contact surface with the grinding wheel. Do not use flanges without relief.
  5. When attaching the grinding wheel to the flange, do not overtighten the nut.
  6. Do not use the sides of the grinding wheel.
  7. Do not rotate the grinding wheel before installing the grinding wheel cover.
  8. Do not force the grinding wheel against the work piece.
  9. Do not touch the rotating grinding wheel with your hands, feet, fingers, etc.
  10. During the test run, do not stand in front of the direction of rotation of the grinding wheel.
  11. When working with a portable grinder, do not place the grinder on a table, floor, work piece, etc. before the rotation of the grinding wheel has completely stopped.
  12. Do not cut in a place where there is a risk of ignition or explosion.
  13. Do not enter within the range where sparks fly.
  14. Those who have not received safety education should not replace or test run the grinding wheel.

2. Flange outer diameter

  • Reinforced grinding wheel is 1/4 or more of the outer diameter of the grinding wheel
  • Unreinforced grinding wheel is 1/3 or more of the outer diameter of the grinding wheel

3. How to read the date of manufacture

The date of manufacture is displayed in the first 3 digits of the lot number.
Post it near the machine you are using and check it before starting daily work.

  • Avoid using the product in excess of the maximum peripheral speed and impacting the grinding wheel.
  • Always use a grinding wheel cover and personal protective equipment.
  • Install the correct grinding wheel.
  • Use the machine that has been inspected and maintained correctly.
